SERMON ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-NINE

The Cause And Cure Of Earthquakes

First published in the year 1750.

"O come hither, and behold the works of the Lord; what destruction he hath brought upon the earth!" Ps. 46:8.

Of all the judgments which the righteous God inflicts on sinners here, the most dreadful and destructive is an earthquake. This he has lately brought on our part of the earth, and thereby alarmed our fears, and bid us "prepare to meet our God!" The shocks which have been felt in divers places, since that which made this city tremble, may convince us that the danger is not over, and ought to keep us still in awe; seeing "his anger is not turned away, but his band is stretched out still." (Isa. 10:4.)

That I may fall in with the design of Providence at this awful crisis, I shall take occasion from the words of my text,

I. To show that earthquakes are the works of the Lord, and He only bringeth this destruction upon the earth:

II. Call you to behold the works of the Lord, in two or three terrible instances: And,

III. Give you some directions suitable to the occasion.

"Venid, ved las obras del SEÑOR, que ha puesto asolamiento en la tierra" (Salmo 46:8).

De todos los juicios que el Dios justo impone como castigo a los pecadores de aqui abajo, el mas terrible y destructor es el terremoto. Esto ha ocurrido ultimamente en nuestra parte de la tierra, y por eso puso en estado de alarma nuestros temores, e hizo que nos ¡"preparáramos para el encuentro con nuestro Dios"! Las sacudidas que se sintieron en diversos lugares, desde la que hizo temblar a esta ciudad, debe convencernos que el peligro no ha terminado, y que todavia debemos seguir atemorizados, al ver que "ni con todo esto ha cesado su furor, sino que todavia su mano está extendida" (Isaias 10:4).

Con el fin de poder encontrar el designio de la Providencia en esta terrible emergencia, me valdré de las palabras de mi escrito para demostrar:
I. Que los terremotos son obras del Señor, y que solamente El trae esta destrucción a la tierra.
II. Llamar la atención de ustedes para que contemplen las obras del Señor en dos o tres casos terribles, y
III. Dar algunas orientaciones a propósito para la circunstancia.
